âYou got my phone number quickly enough. Is there anything about me you donât know yet?â I asked.
He laughed. âFor someone who says all her secrets are known, you sure are sensitive about anyone finding out anything about you, even the simplest things like your name, address, and phone number.â
âYouâre not exactly just anyone,â I replied, still holding on to a little testiness. For some reason, that felt like a life raft at the moment. I couldnât get over the feeling that I was swimming in a whirlpool of danger when I spoke to him. The thing was, I couldnât understand why yet.
âOh, no? Who am I, then? What do you know about me that no one else does?â he asked, with the first suggestion of any worry in his voice. Was there something dark in his past? Was he afraid I had found out?
âThe newest student, just one day old, in fact.â
âOh. I see. And that necessitates what sort of expectations? Shyness? Insecurity? Timidity?â
âFor most normal people, I suppose.â
âWell, now you know something important about me,â he replied.
âWhich is?â
âIâm not like most normal people. Is that bad?â he quickly followed.
I felt like I was playing verbal ping-pong over the phone, but I couldnât stop. âMaybe Iâm the one whoâs shy, insecure, and timid.â
âSomething tells me youâre not like most normal people, either. Actually, most of the boys in school Iâve spoken to would never accuse you of being shy or timid. If anything, youâve got them spinning on their heels. A few are actually afraid of you.â
âAfraid? Why?â
âThey think you have devious ways of embarrassing them. Although I havenât seen you in action yet, my guess is you do.â
âFirst, I donât believe any of them used the word âdevious.âââ
He laughed. âFree translation,â he said. âYou donât want to hear the exact words.â
âNo, I donât. Even if I did have âdeviousâ ways to embarrass them, I havenât found any of them to be worth the effort, not that it would take all that much effort,â I said. Now I was the one sounding arrogant, but it annoyed me to hear that I was the topic of conversation among those boys and that the conversation was mostly negative, even nasty.
âMaybe theyâre lucky, then.â He paused and then added, âDonât be so harsh. All of them are not that bad.â
âYou can make that sort of judgment after only one day talking to them?â
âTheyâre not that complicated,â he said.
âNow Iâve learned a second important thing about you.â
âWhich is?â
âYouâre a little snobby. Maybe a lot.â
âAnd youâre not? None of them is even worth taking the time to embarrass them, not that it would take that much?â
I probably should have said good-bye and hung up, but I laughed instead. âTouché,â I replied.
âTouché? You donât actually fence, do you? I wouldnât want to end up with a sword in my chest. Do you?â he asked when I was silent too long.
âNo. My most dangerous weapons areââ
âYour words. I know. I have nicks and tears all over my ego.
